My Predictions for 2019's Beauty Trends

Years and decades can be defined by their trends in beauty and fashion, which makes it so exciting and susceptible to frequent changes. For 2019, I looked through my metaphorical crystal ball and conjured up the beauty trends I believe we’ll see most throughout the year.

  1. More Creative Makeup Looks

The last couple of years have been home to clean, dewy skin and a swipe of mascara, but I think that’ll just be the base for 2019. With people like @ruthiebarone gaining more and more attention, I predict fun eye looks and intense blush will take up more room in this year’s beauty space, which is really exciting. I’ve been stocking up on fun items like the Juvia’s Place Afrique Palette and almost all shades of Glossier’s Cloud Paint.

  2. Exfoliating Serums

With Dr. Dennis Gross and Tatcha recently releasing exfoliating serums designed to break up excess oils and target hyperpigmentation and acne, this is going to be a big trend in 2019. Many things have led to this, including the 2017 microbead ban, which made people lose faith in purely physical exfoliants. Ingredients like lactic acid are going to be key in the months to come, so the future is looking pretty bright.

  3. More Conscious Buying

With natural beauty stores popping up and Sephora adding the “clean seal” to some of their products, I think parabens, artificial fragrances, artificial colorants, etc. are on their way out. Being more conscious of these things is key to living a healthier lifestyle free from the worry of beauty products eventually causing cancer or other long-term damage. Being more conscious of packaging while buying is also going to become trendy as taking care of the planet is coming to the forefront of the consumer mindset. Sometimes, recycling beauty packaging can be confusing, so here’s a tip: Origins counters have a drop-off where you can bring your beauty empties and be assured their disposal will be good for the planet. Do yourself and the planet a favor and look into ingredients, sourcing, and ownership in the beauty industry this new year.

  4. Using What You Have

I think every beauty junkie can agree beauty buying is a habit that piques curiosity and fills some sort of void on a bad day or acts as a celebration on a good day. The problem with that is I don’t need fifteen cleansers. I “need” a maximum of three: an oil cleanser for makeup, an exfoliating cleanser when I need to get rid of gunk, and a gentle gel or milky cleanser for normal skin days. I think this year will be a year of purging in whatever way that looks for individuals. I’ve given products to friends, made a plan to hit pan on products, or just thrown some away that I know I’ve had for a while. On January 4th, Into the Gloss posted a photo on their Instagram with the caption, “One way to start the new year: Try using your products until they’re allllll the way gone.” If editors with a whole beauty closet can make this a goal, so can I (and you!!!).
