When I started getting acne in elementary school (yes, the first time I went to a dermatologist was at 7!) I immediately went for the products that promised the fastest results. This meant Clean & Clear’s Persa Gel with 10% benzoyl peroxide and Stridex Pads that burned every time I used them.
I had no idea about the role the skin barrier plays in acne, where to start with an effective routine, how much a good system would cost, or the best ways to use each product. Now that I have tons of years of research under my belt, along with the fact that skincare has come incredibly far in the last ten years, here’s the routine I wish I had. Each product in this lineup is accessible, non-irritating, and available at Ulta!
Step 1: Cleanse
Product: Cetaphil Gentle Exfoliating SA Cleanser
For most people, in the morning, I recommend wiping your face down with a clean, damp washcloth. If you have extra oily skin, feel free to use twice per day. At night, wash with this for a full 60 seconds so the salicylic acid has some time to do its job. Don’t forget to go along the jawline, hairline, and every little nook where acne pops up for you.
Step 2: Treat
Product: Byoma Clarifying Serum
This is a gentle gem that’s packed with skin-loving ingredients: zinc (to calm inflammation), PHA (a gentle exfoliant that helps keep pores clear), and ceramides (to support your barrier and soothe redness).
Apply a few drops after cleansing and before your moisturizer—every morning and night.
Step 3: Moisturize
Product: Bubble Cloud Surf Water Cream
If you’ve been avoiding moisturizer because you're scared it’ll break you out, please break this habit now! Acne-prone and oily skin still need hydration. In fact, not moisturizing can sometimes make things worse because drier skin can take longer to heal.
This water cream is lightweight, fast-absorbing, and free from pore-clogging ingredients. It gives your skin what it needs without adding heaviness or shine. Use morning and night after your serum.
Step 4: Protect
Product: Cocokind Daily SPF 32 Mineral Facial Sunscreen
Sunscreen is non-negotiable, especially if you’re dealing with acne or dark spots. UV exposure can make post-acne marks last longer, and skipping SPF can undo your skin-healing progress.
This mineral sunscreen is calming (thanks to zinc), and it layers well under makeup or on its own. Wait a minute or two after your moisturizer to apply it every morning—yes, even if it’s cloudy.
Step 5: Spot Treat
Product: Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Invisible+ Pimple Patches
If you’ve got a pimple that’s come to a head you’re tempted to pop, pause and grab one of these instead. These hydrocolloid patches help draw out the gunk while preventing you from picking.
Apply it right after cleansing, before the rest of your routine. They’re super thin and barely noticeable, so you can wear them during the day or sleep in them overnight. Just make sure to leave them on for 6+ hours for best results!
Final thoughts
This routine is simple, effective, and affordable ($68 in total at the time of writing!). Every product gentle enough to not strip your skin with harsh actives, and supports hydration, so you’ll be on your way to clearer, glowier skin.
If you’re just starting out—or if you’re a guardian of a tween/teen who’s overwhelmed by skincare—this is the routine I wish someone had handed years ago.
